Question from an enamelist this week: What Is the thickness of the metal being used for Plique a Jour?

I have used any gauge from 18 to 30 gauge, and either way I’ve seen it work very well.

I’m posting an image here of a jewel that is 30 gauge and it’s over 60 years old and has been worn quite often, and shows no signs of cracking. Amazing!

Metal thickness does not determine whether Plique-à-Jour will succeed.

Metal Gauge in Plique-à-Jour

Plique-à-Jour can be successfully executed on a surprisingly wide range of metal gauges. I’ve personally used anything from 18 gauge down to 30 gauge, and when the structure and firing are done properly, all can perform beautifully.

Thickness alone doesn’t determine durability.

For example, I am showing here a piece made in 30-gauge metal that is over 60 years old. It has been worn frequently and still shows no cracking at all, which is pretty remarkable. That kind of longevity demonstrates that well-executed Plique-à-Jour can remain stable even on very thin metal.

Many enamelists actually prefer thinner metal for Plique-à-Jour because it allows more light transmission and delicacy, which is part of the technique’s beauty.
